창덕궁은 태종 5년(1405년) 경복궁에 이어 두 번째로 세워진 조선의 궁궐이다. 현재 창덕궁은 크게 인정전과 선정전을 중심으로 한 치조(治朝) 영역, 희정당과 대조전을 중심으로 한 침전 영역, 동쪽의 낙선재 영역, 그리고 북쪽 언덕 너머 후원으로 이루어져 있다. 궁궐의 앞쪽에는 공적인 공간을 두고 뒤쪽에는 사적인 공간을 두는 전조후침(前朝後寢)의 원칙에 따라 궁궐 앞에는 공적인 공간으로 궁궐의 으뜸 건물인 인정전, 임금의 집무실인 선정전, 임금을 보좌하는 여러 관청인 궐내각사(闕內各司)가 자리 잡고 있고, 뒷부분에는 임금과 왕실의 사적인 공간인 임금과 왕비의 처소가 있다.

Changdeokgung was the second palace after Gyeongbokgung which had been established in 1395 as a primary palace. Changdeokgung consists of governmental area (치조, 治朝, chijo) centering on Injeongjeon and Seonjeongjeon, royal private area (침전, 寢殿, chimjeon, meaning 'a house of king's bedroom'), Nakseonjae area in the east, and Huwon beyond the north hills. Most of major official buildings such as Injeongjeon, main hall of Changdeokgung, Seonjeongjeon, king's office, and many of government offices (궐내각사, 闕內各司, gwollaegaksa) are placed in the front parts of the palace, beyond which there are royal private court for king and queen. King's houses like Seonjeongjeon, Huijeongdang, and Nakseonjae are surrounded in many folds of buildings and courts in case any outsider break through. The architectural style of Changdeokgung overall features simplicity and frugality because of Confucian ideology.

인정전(Injeongjeon)

창덕궁 인정전(昌德宮仁政殿)은 창덕궁의 정전으로 왕이 외국의 사신을 접견하고 신하들로부터 조하를 받는 등, 공식적인 국가행사를 치르던 곳이다.

Injeongjeon Hall (National Treasure) – The throne hall of Changdeokgung, it was used for major state affairs including the coronation of a new king and receiving foreign envoys.

낙선재(Naksunjae)

낙선재는 다른 곳에서는 쉽게 찾아볼 수 없는 다양한 문양의 장식이 특히 주목되며, 조선 후기 건축 장인(匠人)들의 축적된 기량을 엿볼 수 있어 건축적인 가치가 높다. 또한 조선왕가의 실제 침전으로 사용된 역사성도 중요한 건물이다.

Nakseonjae is particularly notable for its various patterns that are not easily found elsewhere, and its architectural value is high as it offers a glimpse of the accumulated skills of architectural craftsmen of the late Joseon Dynasty. The historicity used as a real invasion of the Joseon royal family is also important.
