창덕궁 후원(昌德宮後苑) 또는 비원(祕苑)은 창덕궁 북쪽에 창경궁과 붙어 있는 한국 최대의 궁중 정원이다. 정원에는 왕실 도서관이었던 규장각과 더불어, 영화당(映花堂), 주합루, 서향각(書香閣), 영춘루(迎春樓), 소요정(逍遼亭), 태극정(太極亭), 연경당(演慶堂) 등 여러 정자와 연못들, 물이 흐르는 옥류천이 있고, 녹화(綠化)된 잔디, 나무, 꽃들이 심어져 있다. 또한 수백종의 나무들이 26,000그루 넘게 심어져 있고, 이 중 일부는 300년이 넘은 나무들도 있다.

Behind the palace lies the 78-acre (32 ha) Huwon (후원, 後苑, Rear garden) which was originally constructed for the use of the royal family and palace women. The garden incorporates a lotus pond, pavilions, and landscaped lawns, trees, and flowers. There are over 26,000 specimens of a hundred different species of trees in the garden and some of the trees behind the palace are over 300 years old. Though the garden had many other names, the one most frequently used through Joseon dynasty period was 'Huwon'.

부용정(Buyongjeong Pavilion of Changdeokgung Palace)

조선시대 궁궐인 창덕궁의 후원에 있는 정자이다. 위치는 주합루의 남쪽에 위치해있으며 창덕궁 후원을 관람할 때 가장 먼저 보게 되는 건물이다. 이름 ‘부용(芙蓉)’은 ‘활짝 핀 연꽃’이란 뜻이다.

This pavilion is located in the patronage of Changdeokgung Palace, a palace of the Joseon Dynasty. The location is located to the south of Juhapru and is the first building to be seen when viewing the sponsorship of Changdeokgung Palace. The name Buyong means "blowing lotus flower."

옥류천(Ongnyucheon of Changdeokgung Palace)

후원의 깊은 곳에서 발원한 옥류천(玉流川)은 소요암(逍遙巖)에서 옥류천(玉流泉)을 이루며, 소요암이 보이는 곳에 소요정(逍遙亭)이 세워져 있다. 초가지붕을 인 청의정(淸漪亭)과 소요정 사이에 인조가 팠다고 전해지는 어정(御井)이 있으며, 어정의 샘물을 마시고 돌아가는 왕이 쉬도록 취한정(翠寒亭)을 세웠다.

The Ongnyucheon (옥류천, 玉流川, "Jade Stream") area is of particular interest. It contains a U-shaped water channel carved in 1636 for floating wine cups, with a small waterfall and an inscribed poem on the boulder above it. The area also contains five small pavilions.

창덕궁은 태종 5년(1405년) 경복궁에 이어 두 번째로 세워진 조선의 궁궐이다. 현재 창덕궁은 크게 인정전과 선정전을 중심으로 한 치조(治朝) 영역, 희정당과 대조전을 중심으로 한 침전 영역, 동쪽의 낙선재 영역, 그리고 북쪽 언덕 너머 후원으로 이루어져 있다.

Changdeokgung was the second palace after Gyeongbokgung which had been established in 1395 as a primary palace. Changdeokgung consists of governmental area (치조, 治朝, chijo) centering on Injeongjeon and Seonjeongjeon, royal private area (침전, 寢殿, chimjeon, meaning 'a house of king's bedroom'), Nakseonjae area in the east, and Huwon beyond the north hills.
